Will
Shaq and Kobe's Threats
Land Jackson in LA?
Fri, Jun 11, 1999
LOS ANGELES (Friday, June 11, 1999) -
Amid reported threats from stars like
Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, Lakers
owner Jerry Buss reportedly offered former Bulls coach
Phil Jackson a 4-year deal worth more than $20 million.
Fox Sports News said Jackson's agent, Todd Musburger,
indicated his client is in "serious negotiations" with the
Lakers. A source told the network that a deal could be
completed in the next few days.
O'Neal reportedly threatened to opt for an out-clause in his
contract that would have allowed him to become a free
agent had the Lakers not made an effort for Jackson.
Reports say Bryant also voiced his desire to play for
Jackson, who guided the Chicago Bulls to six
championships.
Jackson was on vacation in Alaska and unavailable for
comment.
Lakers owner Jerry Buss, reached after the Los Angeles
Sparks' WNBA opener Thursday night at the Forum, would
not confirm or deny the report.
"I've been out of town. I've got to talk to Jerry West," Buss
said, referring to the team's executive vice president. "We'll
see."
It gets better. According to the Chicago Tribune, the
Lakers are also exploring the possibility of trading Glen
Rice for Scottie Pippen, who played for Jackson in
Chicago.
Jackson left the Bulls after last year's championship and
did not coach this season. Several other teams, including
the New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets, also are
reportedly interested in hiring Jackson. |
